Dear Lubuntu Users,

As always, we are keen to improve Lubuntu Users Experience on all levels. Rest does not exist in our dictionary and therefore, we are pleased to introduce new applications for you to test and if the feedback is good, we may include that by default in future releases :)

  1. Hey, just tested the apps and I really like Viewnior and MenuLibre, thanks for the hint!
By the way, where you got those Icons from?

    1. You are most welcome and I'm glad you did some tests and you have a good feedback :)

These are the default in 13.04 :)

  2. @Philipp, the icons are here: /usr/share/icons/lubuntu/categories/ if you have a default Lubuntu installation and you are referring to those in the MenuLibre image.

@Ali, great post :D Since this is my first comment here, I'm keeping it short ;)

  3. I'm back and I'm trying out Xombrero ....

In short, it works on some sites and doesn't on others. The problematic sites for me are askubuntu.com and Facebook! What happens is that the pages open normally, but then, at some point, Xombrero becomes unresponsive and CPU usage and my laptop's temperature rise. Not good :(

I have seen the same problem with the same hardware on a couple of other WebKit browsers, Epiphany and Midori. But Chrome and Chromium, also WebKit, don't give me any problem. Firefox and Opera work okay too.

I had written about my experience with Midori and Epiphany here ( h t t p : / / ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2055851). A couple of other forum members did **not** have any problem.

    I notice that there's Bug #1177770: "While loading bbc.co.uk or nationalrail.co.uk for example the browser crashes, either locking up or disappears silently." (h t t p s : / / bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1177770)

YouTube seemed to work fine for the short time that I tried it.

Have you tried Facebook with Xombrero? If you try on machines with different specs, you may get a better picture.

Anyway, in short, even if Xombrero works, it's quite a techie browser. Not something the "average" user would be comfortable with.

Oh, and the first screen that appears when Xombrero is started for the first time is a bit scary:
    Startup Exception
    Startup Exception(s):
    Welcome to xombrero 1.4.0!
    Details at xombrero wiki page

    Cheers!

    1. Hello vasa1,

Interesting feedback. YouTube worked just fine with xombrero but I didn't check the other sites yet. Just installed it on Lubuntu 13.04 upgraded from 12.10 and will try it out.

I don't know when we shall vote for the default app but definitely, I will not vote for it. It is nice to have an alternative choice but the default should be Firefox if you ask me.

I will try to test but a side of I'm sick these days (flu), I have urgent stuff to do so real life comes first :)

By the way, don't forget please to send your feedback on the mailing list - just reply my email that I sent few days ago about the non-official apps :)

Thank you so much for sharing ;)

  4. Hahaha, awesome, I have been using menulibre since it was released. I actually asked the dev before it was released if it would work in LXDE. I think this "needs" to be in Lubuntu by default.

  5. Halo, Ali.

Is there any application for modifying the DPI ?
In Xubuntu, it is in similar window for setting font-hinting.
I cant find it in Lubuntu.

Well, I am new in Linux, I always need UI. :(

NB: I have a long stupid journey ... Ubuntu gnome2 > UbuntuUnity) > LinuxMint xfce > Xubuntu > Lubuntu > UbuntuGnome3 > LinuxMint MATE > Xubuntu > Lubuntu. Now, I have Xubuntu 1304 and Lubuntu 1304 (dual boot) on my netbook. Lubuntu is faster and takes less resource. I think I will remove one of them and you can guess which one it is. :)

    Thank you.

    1. Hello Qua Purna,

Menu > Preferences > Customize Look and Feel
Menu > Preferences > Openbox Configuration Manager

I believe you can use these two to change the font :)
Also, you can change the screen resolution if you want:

Menu > Preferences > Monitor Settings

Lubuntu is a great system and you have made the right choice ;)

  6. Are these for Lubuntu 13.04? Or 64 bits specific?
I'm trying to install Compton on a Lubuntu 12.04 32 bits, and I get 404 errors after adding the PPA and running an apt-get update.

    TIA :D

    1. For Lubuntu 13.04 and 12.10 and there are two apps of them ready for Suacy too.

It does not matter whether it is 32bit or 64bit :)

I'm sorry, these will not work for 12.04 :)
